Flowers in the vase

I've been playing with wool last week and made some felted vessels.I wanted to practice making the 3D object and find out how much wool is needed to make them stable and sturdy. They're all made of white merino wool and decorated with black yarn and precut prefelt circles. I am not 100% happy with them (bit too many wrinkles for my liking), but it was a good first try. The one with a hole was a bit tricky, the shaping was a pain as I did not have anything that could be used as a mould (form) during the shaping process and I will have to do some research to see if there's anything available online or alternatively (and most likely) make the form myself. 

While the vessels were drying I made a bunch of felt flowers. Initially I wanted them to go in the vessels, but then I think I like the vessels better on their own. I will have to find a nice glass vase for the flowers, an empty wine bottle should do for now. 

Ostatnimi czasy bawiłam się trochę w filcowanie wazoników. Chciałam poćwiczyć formy przestrzenne, zobaczyć ile wełny potrzebne jest na uzyskanie stabilnej i sztywnej bryły i w jaki sposów najlepiej je kształtować. Powstałe prototypy zrobione są z białego merynosa z dodatkiem czarnej nitki wełnianej i kółek wyciętych z przygotowanego prefeltu. Nie jestem do konca zadowolona, troche za duzo na nich zmarszczek. Nastepne bedą lepsze. Kształtowanie tej z dziurką było małym koszmarem, bo nie miałam formy która by pasowała d o środka. Będę musiała poszperać w sieci, może gdzieś znajdę takie nietypowe formy a jak nie (co jest wielce prawdopodobne) trzeba bedzie samemu sobie taką forme strzelić.

W tak zwanym miedzyczasie, kiedy wazoniki sobie schly, powstały kwiatki na łodyżkach. Miały byc do kompletu, ale im dłuzej patrzę na wazoniki tym bardziej podobaja mi się bez "wkładek". Na kwiatki znajde jakis inny pojemnik. Szklanych wazoników chyba nie mam w domu, ale jakaś pusta butelka po winie powinna sie znaleźć, a jak nie, to trzeba bedzie opróżnić jakieś. Nie ma to jak mieć pretekst żeby sie napić ;)

What else? Oh yes. I've updated the workshop schedule for June/ July, found a new retail outlet that would sell my items (Yay me!), run a few workshops here, completed knitting the Fleece (but have to take photos before I blog about it here) and there and been busy test knitting a new lace pattern. It will be a traditional lace with an Irish twist. I'm almost half way done with the knitting, so watch this space for photos and details.

Oki doki, I'm off to eat some and then have to leave the house for a short while (although to be perfectly honest with you, I'd be much happier staying indoors when it's dry and warm, ugh... the Irish summer ;/) I think there will be some knitting in the evening and maybe a glass (or 5) of wine. Need to work on the empty wine bottles for the flowers, right?

Co poza tym? A, tak. Uaktualniłam liste warsztatów na czerwiec/lipiec, znalazłam nowy sklepik gdzie mozna od niedawna zakupic moje wyroby, poprowadziłam kilka kursów tu i tam, skończyłam dziergać Fleece (ale nie mam jeszcze zdjęć więc szczegóły inną razą) i wreszcie pracuje sobie powoli nad nowym wzorem na szal(ik). Bedzie to tradycyjny ażur z irlandzkim akcentem. Chyba że nastąpi zmiana koncepcji, ale jak narazie mam zrobiona połowę i chyba zdania nie zmienię. Chyba...

No dobra ludki moje kochane, zmykam cos na ruszt wrzucić a później niestety muszę na chwilę wybyc z domu (jakbyscie widzieli co się za oknem dzieje też byście nie skakali z radości). Wieczorkiem chyba zapodam sobie jakiegoś dobrego filma i wydziergam kilka dodatkowych ażurowych rządków popijając winkiem. Wkońcu trzeba popracowac nad tym wazonem na kwiaty ;P

Bloomin' cupcakes and workshops

Hi all! I finally sat down to write all the latest news before I get distracted for another several weeks. So here goes!

• The new range of flower brooches is now available in Pippa Blue, Galway and The Mood Gallery, Castlebar.

I decided to display them on a cute cupcake stand which I bought for a reasonable price in a local shop. I think that now they are eye catching. Don't you?  I like them this way ;)

• Recently The Mood Gallery in Castlebar held a two part felting workshop during which a group of six created the most beautiful felted landscapes (and one angel) learning the basics of wet and dry felting techniques. Well done everyone!

I loved seeing everyone's work in progress, each person had an unique approach and no two pictures looked alike. Most importantly, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves during the few afternoon hours we spent together and I have already had few inquires about further workshops. I am thrilled that this one turned out to be a success and will come back to The Mood Gallery to run few more workshops in the future. • I had some leaflets distributed around Galway today, advertising the series of craft workshops I will be running, to the local community. Here's the schedule for May and June/July will follow shortly. 

I need to make sure I have enough material for all of you to work with, so if you're interested, please book your place in advance. I would hate to have to turn you down just because I ran out of wool or felting needles.

Felt landscape – Two 3h sessions (wet and dry felting techniques)

No previous felting experience required. Learn the basics of wet and dry (needle) felting and create a piece of nature inspired flat felt to take home with you. Classes limited to 4 people.

Felt flower – 2h session

No previous experience required. Learn the basics of wet felting and create a flower (which can be used as an accessory or as a home decor). Classes limited to 6 people.

• Some of you may have heard already about FondeliFair a new IRISH website dedicated to Arts and Crafts. The site launches on the 30th of May so you still have few weeks to get this name memorised.

FondeliFair is a platform that combines a marketplace with a blog host and social community. Think ETSY/eBay/DoneDeal meets blogger/wordpress and facebook. Handy! It's all in one place, no need to leave the house at all. 

Alice, the Mastermind behind Fondelifair writes: "People blog about crafts, people sell their crafts online, people talk on forums about their crafts. But there is no site that lets you do all of this in the one place, this is why I developed Fondelifair".

Weather you're looking for unique items, designed and made in Ireland, or a place to blog about your craft and share your passion this is a site for you. I've set up a website there, part of which is a twin site to this blog. From now on, every time I post here, same message will be posted on my fondelifair blog. I am working on my shop design and slowly add new items to the inventory. I hope to have a nice "full" shop for the launch day but need few sunny days to take photos of my recent work and that might be simply too much to ask for. I fear that we've already HAD a Summer and now it's just rain, rain and... more rain. But maybe (and hopefully) I am wrong and there's a marvellous sunshine predicted for the emerald island in the near future. For now though, I have the bloomin' cupcakes to brighten my day:

Intruducing a new felt flower line for Summer/ Fall 2011!

Made of pure merino wool with addition of silk or tencel. 

Hand felted using the wet felt technique.
Finished off with pearl beads and flower stamen.

Approximate size: 4" (10cm). 

Perfect for dressing up in Summer/Fall (T-shits, tank tops, jackets, hats, bags or hair accessory).

First batch consisted mainly of blue, turquoise, yellow/orange and pink (from salmon to fushia) flowers but more colours will follow shortly.

For some reason my camera has problems catching the turquoise colour accurately. It ends up looking plain boring blue ;/ Well until I get better pictures of them, you will just have to trust me. The colours are lovely. I kept one of the brooches for myself and the rest will either be listed on ETSY or be available in the local shops.

Nowe broszki na Lato/Jesień 2011

Wykonane ręcznie z miękkiej wełny meryno metodą filcowania na mokro.

Wykończone perłowymi koralikami i słypkami kwiatowymi.

Rozmiar: około 10cm

Idealne jako akcesoria do lzejszych letnio/jesiennych ubrań, kapeluszy, torebek a także jako ozdoba głowy (bo każda wariatka ma na/w głowie kwiatka)

Pierwsza partia to głównie kolor niebieski, turkusy, żółcie/pamarańcze i róże (od łososiowego po fuksję). Z nieznanych mi przyczyn, mój wysłużony aparat fotograficzny ma ogromne kłopoty ze złapaniem turkusu. Robi mi wszystko w niebieskościach ;/ Dopóki nie zrobie jakiejś lekkiej korekty barw i lepszych zdjęć, musicie mi więc uwierzyc na słowo. Wśród tych wszystkich niebieskości kryją się naprawdę ładne turkusy. :)
Jedną żółtą brochę zatrzymałam dla siebie (nie mam jej na zdjęciu) a reszta albo trafi na ETSY albo zasili półki sklepów przyjaznych rękodziełu.

Easter bunny brought me some rare fibre to play with: several Polish sheep breeds and some fur from syberian husky (or alaskan malamute?). We'll see what can be spun from it.

Zajączek na święta przyniósł mi paczuszkę od Eli z próbkami wełny z polskich uowiecek. A ze Szczecina przyleciała próbka z wyczesanym futrem huskiego (albo malamuta?). Zobaczymy co się da z tego ukręcić.

Felt bag revealed at last

It took me ages to finish sewing in the beads and get decent photos of it, but let me tell you, this is one of my favourite bags already! It still needs a proper magnetic clasp abut I have been using it already and love it to bits! But let me tell you a bit about it. It came to life in a rural Ireland on a sunny (and then wet) day of March. I drove all the way to Co. Carlow to meet Nicola and 3 other ladies and spend a day designing and felting a bag. I almost ended up driving to the wrong part of the island as for some reason google map got very confused with Nicola's address and directed me to Co. Kerry. Fortunately I got in touch with Nicola before I left the house, which saved me driving 200km in the opposite direction ;) 

Wydaje się, że całe wieki zajęło mi skończenie mojej filcowej torby choc wcale nie przeszkadzało mi to w jej używaniu i zaliczeniu jej do grona moich ulubionych. Ciągle brakuje jej porządnego zatrzasku ale co tam. Znajdę, kupię i przyczepię. A do tego czasu będę nosić bez. A mało brakowało a torba wogóle by sie nie "urodziła". Zapisałam sie bowiem na kurs filcowania do Nicoli i zadowolona zaczęłam planowac wyjazd. Ponieważ nie posiadam nawigacji satelitarnej a podróż autobusem/pociągiem w tym kraju raczej mija się za celem, postanowiłam że zaufam mapom google. Wpisałam więc w wyszukiwarkę adres Nicoli i wydrukowałam mapkę. Na szczęście jednak, zanim wyruszyłam w ponad dwustu kilometrową podróż do hrabstwa Kerry, wysłałam mejla do Nicoli z prośbą o wytłumaczenie jak wygląda i gdzie dokładnie jest jej studio. No i okazało się, że nie mieszka ona w hrabstwie Kerry a raczej Carlow, które znajduje się w zupełnie innej części wyspy. Ja wiem, że Irlandia nie jest dużym krajem ale nie byłabym zadowolona gdybym w sobote rano dzwoniła do Nicoli żeby jej zameldować że zgubiłam się pod Killarney, kiedy jej studio znajduje się pod Kilkenny (jakies 3h drogi)!

After a rather long drive, which seemed even longer considering that I left the house before the sunrise to arrive at my destination on time, I reached Clasheen HQ and was greeted by uber friendly duo: Rex and his owner, Nicola. 

We started the day with a tea/ coffee and a little introductionery chat and then we all eagerly relocated to Nicola's studio where she walked us through the different bag designs, their sizes and shapes, flaps, pockets, straps and/or other handles. We talked about the inclusions, use of different materials (i.e glass or stone pebbles, beads, dreadlocks, fish skin(!), fabric, plastic nets... you name it). Finally we started sketching the designs and got to work picking  materials, laying out the layers and felting. 

Wydrukowałam nowe mapki, sprawdziłam nawet zdjęcia z ulicy i przed bladym świtem wyruszyłam w podróż. Dotarłam na miejsce po prawie 3 godzinach drogi, idealnie na czas. Przywitał mnie bardzo przyjacielski duet: pies Rex i jego pani Nicola. 

Po szybkiej kawie/herbacie i przywitaniu się z pozostałymi uczestniczkami kursu, przeniosłysmy sie do studio i zabrały do roboty. Nicola pokazała nam swoje filcowe torby omawiając różnice w ich konstrukcji, rozmiarze, kształcie, a także rozmieszczeniu kieszeni i rodzaju pasków, rączek i innych uchwytów. Omówiłyśmy różne techniki i materiały (szklane kamyki, zwykłe kamyki, koraliki, dredy, rybie skóry (!), plastikowe siatki itd itp) Wreszcie kazda z nas zabrała się za szkicowanie projektu własnej torby, wybieranie materiałów i samo filcowanie.

I have chosen to make a medium size bag with incorporated strap and an inner pocket using icelandic wool and a piece of knitted fabric (stockinette stitch piece made with NORO Kureyon). I also chose to incorporate glass pebbles and the pieces of knitted fabric deep in the felt layers. After a good few hours of rubbing and rolling and I was ready to cut the resist out and form the strap before driving home to Galway.

Zdecydowałam się na średniej wielkości torbę z wbudowanym długim paskiem i wewnętrzną kieszonką. Moim materiałem roboczym miała być czarna wełna  z islandzkich owiec i kawałek dzianiny wykonanej z włóczki NORO Kureyon. Dodatkowo pistanowiłam ozdobic torbe szklanymi kamyczkami i wykończyć koralikami. Po kilku godzinach układania kolejnych warstw, masowania i rolowania, bylam gotowa do nacięcia torby, wyciecia paska i wyjęcia szablonu. Tyle zdążyłam zrobic u Nicoli.

I spent the next morning working some more on the bag. The wool layers were quite thick and needed more fulling, inclusions and pebbles needed releasing and the freshly cut edges needed sealing and then the bag needed the third dimension. I think it took me about 7 hours to get the whole piece done in part probably because it was the first time making it and I really wanted to do it properly to learn to feel the wool at each stage of work. 

The next step was to decorate the dry bag with beads and sew in the inner pocket. Once this was done the weather turned from bad to worse and there was no way I could take a half descent photo of the bag. Ugh... that of course did not stop me from using the bag ;) 

Dofilcowanie torby, wycięcie otworów na szklane dropsy i zasklepienie cietych krawędzi zajęło mi cały następny ranek. Później trzeba było jeszcze  nadać płaskiej torbie trzeci wymiar i porządnie wysuszyć. Jak dobrze policzę to spędziłam na tej zabawie jakieś 7 godzin. Dużo, wiem. Ale chciałam zrobić wszystko książkowo i nauczyc się "czuć" wełnę w każdym kolejnym stadium roboty.

Sucha torbe należało jeszcze wykonczyć. Podszyłam wewnętrzna kieszonkę, przyszyłam koraliki. Pogoda sie sknociła i za nic w świecie nie mogłam zrobić jej prządnych zdjęć. Ale nosic mogłam ... to nosiłam.

Thank you Nicola! Not only it was a pleasure to meet you and the rest of felt ladies (not to mention your dog, which I wanted to kidnap and take home with me!) I also learned a lot and most importantly got tons of inspiration. I am already planning on making another one, but need to source the Icelandic or Norwegian wool and Wensleydale locks first. Then, there's no stopping me! I mean, we can never have too many bags, right ladies?

Wielkie dzięki dla Nicoli za mozliwość poznania jej i jej cudnego psa (którego chciałam porwać i zabrać ze sobą do domu), za dzień spędzony na nauce, eksperymentach ale przede wszystkim dzieki za zdrową dawkę inspiracji. W głowie mam już kilka kolejnych toreb i jak tylko znajdę dobrego dostawcę isladzkiej lub norweskiej wełny i loków z wensleydale, biorę się za robotę. W końcu torebek nigdy za wiele, prawda?

Nuno felting - baby steps...

With every new technique you wish to master, the first steps are the most exciting and the toughest at the same time. You have a vision of the end product but how to get there? You obviously know this and that from reading various sources, be it a book, blog or an experts' forum. But you still lack the crucial hands on experience. Will you jump into deep waters?

I did. I love to experiment, learn new things. Even if they don't come out exactly as I'd imagine. I see what works, what doesn't and try to improve. I dig even dipper into the theory, find answers to my new questions, look up few more videos on youtube etc...

My first nuno felting experience was a good one. I made something that can even be worn! Has it lived up to my expectations. Emm... not exactly. See for yourselves:

Przy nauce każdej nowej techniki, pierwsze nieśmiałe kroczki są najbardziej ekscytujące i najtrudniejsze zarazem. No bo niby mamy jakąś tam wizję. Wiemy jak dana rzecz ma wyglądać jak już z nią skończymy. Ale jak dotrzeć do tego końca i kiedy on właściwie będzie?Oczywiście przekopaliśmy masę materiałów, czy to książki, blogi, czy fora internetowe. Wiedza teoretyczna jest, ale brakuje nam doświadczenia. Czy mimo wszystko wskoczyć na głęboka wodę?

Wskoczyłam. Uwielbiam eksperymentować i zdobywać nowe umiejętności. Nawet jeśli moje eksperymenty nie są do końca udane, to zawsze jest jakaś ich część która sprawdza się"w praniu". Nad resztą pracuję, zmieniam, czytam dalej, zadaję nowe pytania, szukam odpowiedzi, podglądam ekspertów itp itd...

Z moim pierwszym projektem nono filcu było nie najgorzej. Przynajmniej zrobiłam coś, co nadaje się do założenia. Ale czy jest to dokładnie to, co miałam na myśli? Zdecydowanie nie. Dużo jeszcze pracy przede mną, sami popatrzcie:

The minalistic colours are ok, the design is ok and so is the texture, but I don't like the border and the middle part should have more prominent holes. I think I need to cut them bigger or maybe a bit later in the felting process. The ones I cut here sealed back again ;/ I've no idea how to make the border nice and straight. Unless I use a pre-felt. But I think it still may go a bit wavy as it felts. 

So as you see there's plenty of room for improvements and further experimentation.

Kolory są minimalistyczne ale takie chciałam - niebieski i biel. Materiały dobre - wełna i tencel. Tekstura też ok - mat i połysk. Ale rozczarowała mnie koślawa bordiura i dziurki wycięte w części środkowej. Albo wycięłam je za małe albo za wcześnie w procesie filcowania i się dziadygi zrosły ;( A taki miałam ładny wzorek. 

Duuużo pracy przede mną, oj dużo.
